Woking Football Club was formed in 1889 and became part of the top division in the Isthmian league which they remained in for a number of years before being relegated in 1982/83. After plunging further down the pyramid, the Cards managed to get back into the top league in 1989/90 under the guidance of Geoff Chapple. In 1991/92, the club was promoted to the Conference as champions with seven games still left to be played in the league season. Woking were to remain at this level for over a decade, finishing runners up twice in 1994/95 and 1995/96, however they were relegated to Blue Square South in the 2008/09 season, managing just 44 points from 46 matches. Last season, they almost returned at the first attempt but lost out to Bath City in the playoff final at Twerton Park 1-0.
In recent(ish) years, the Cards have been famous for giant killing antics in the F.A. Cup, most notably a 4-2 win against West Bromwich Albion and a 1-1 draw at Coventry City, and three F.A. Trophy triumphs in 1994, 1995 and 1997. Along with an F.A. Amateur Cup win in 1958, they remain unbeaten at Wembley, having won four times out of four. They also reached the F.A. Trophy final in 2006 but lost 2-0 to Grays Athletic at Upton Park and have won the William Hill Trophy (1995), the GLS Conference Cup (2005) and the Surrey Senior Cup (numerous times).
