Woking win at home!

Woking 2 York City 0: 28 January 2006
by Mick

Scorers
Justin Richards 23
Steve Ferguson 52

After a clash of heads in the Cardsweb match earlier (I'm now nursing a broken eye socket you know!) I managed to view the game against York City through an eye and a half, to be fair that was better than it being just the one eye it could easily have been a little later on as the swelling increased. Anyway, back to the point, maybe my vision was a bit blurry but I swore that we were playing 4-4-2 with two very attacking wingers and playing well too.

With McAllister and Richards reinstated as a two man strike force with Sharpling and Ferguson playing on the wings the Cards looked a much more threatening attacking force with more options and flair. Although York were disappointing for a team so high up the table but they are clearly going through a bad patch the Cards always looked likely winners from the word go. The visitors were a little unlucky with the goal as they were down to ten men through injury at the time but when Justin Richards struck on 24 minutes to take his tally for the season to 14 it was no less than Woking deserved.

After some decent pressure and numerous crosses and Smithy long throws the goal arrived after Justin had already threatened to open the scoring a couple of times with shots on goal. A long launched throw in from Smithy was flicked on by McAllister and reached Justin in the area who kept his cool and turned neatly and got a shot away before the defender could get a block in and it did just enough to beat Porter at his near post.

Steve Ferguson almost added a second just moments later when his header cannoned back off the post following another Smith throw, it had the keeper' beaten all ends up but just didn't have quite the accuracy to find the net. The Cards continued to press but although they had the pressure failed to add another despite a rasping volley from Ian Selley which flew just over the bar. At the other end, although York had their moments the defensive partnership of Nethercott and Hutchinson held firm, especially the latter who once again impressed.

The second goal came just seven minutes into the second half after York had started reasonably well. Once again, the danger arrived from a Neil Smith throw which was only partly cleared and ended up falling nicely for Steve 'the best volleyer outside the Premiership' Ferguson who hammered it at an angle causing it to rifle into the roof of the net without Porter so much as moving, it really was a super strike.

I think from that moment, both teams knew that the final result would be a Woking win. The Cards were quite happy for York to have the ball as long for longer periods and they occasionally broke looking for a third themselves but there was no real urgency with the score at 2-0. At last a good result at home, and a good performance too, hopefully there will be more of the same against Welling next week.

Woking (4-4-2): Jalal; Smith, Hutchinson, Nethercott, El-Salahi; Sharpling (MacDonald 90), Murray, Selley, Ferguson (Evans 83); McAllister, Richards. Subs not used: Aggrey, L Cockerill, Davies

Man of the match: Chris Sharpling - a welcome return to form, got crosses in and looked a danger.
