Oh Dear...Woking 0-1 Ashford: 6th March 2006 by Mick
Oh Dear. So the Surrey Senior Cup was hardly a dream but I always like to see us do well in it. With a strong enough team out including Ferguson, Richards, Nethercott and Evans, the Cards were defeated 1-0 by Ashford and deservedly so. Even after conceding they never looked like scoring and although Richards impressed, holding the ball up well and winning headers for once, he failed to get away to make the crucial difference.
Before Ashford stole the lead midway through the second half Woking had their chances. Early on Luke Townsend had a glorious opportunity having been released by Evans but he put it wide when he should have at least hit the target. Ashford mounted some pressure after that, corners flew in from everywhere and there were a few moments where the ball could easily have ended up in the net. Richards went close later on when he was just about to apply the finish to a cross when a crucial interception stopped him heading home.
Ferguson got away down the right several times but never provided the clinical cross although he wasn't helped but Justin's indecisive runs and Townsend seemed largely anonymous. The midfield looked a bit lost, Sam ran around like a headless chicken and Evo was weak in the tackle on too many occasions. At the back there was a few crosses that caused problems but they looked ok in the first half with Matt Ruby looked fairly assured. Clint had a good first half pulling off two terrific saves, tipping over a header from a corner and just getting fingertips to a long range but powerful effort.
The closest the Cards came in the second came from a shot from Sam Cockerill as he cheasted it into the area and released a low drive, which cannoned back off the post early in the second half. After forcing Clint into making another save and shooting narrowly wide Ashford scored through Ricky Wellard. It was a scrappy goal and should have been prevented but it also seemed nicely finished.
The Cards had one final go at getting an equaliser when Ferguson won a free kick. Karl Murray had his resultant effort saved but won a corner from which pandemonium ensued. Richards flicked it on at the near post only for it to be blocked on the line and then Ferguson had a shot blocked before Nethercott tried an ambitious overhead kick which was goalbound before being diverted away for another corner.
