The Cards finished the season on a high with a comfortable win against Kidderminster Harriers. Passing football was on show in a game where the result was not particularly meaningful and Woking hit the net three times to record their best league win of the season. They lined up with Gindre in goal, Batt, Lorraine, Gasson and Bunce as a back four, Lambu, Maledon, Quamina and Pattison in midfield and Sole and Morgan up front with Gray, youth team striker Sam Yorkie and Ruby all playing a part as substitutes.
It took just six minutes for the Cards to create the first real opportunity, Pattison whipping in a nice cross from out wide which Sole headed goalwards only to be thwarted by a good save from Chris MacKenzie. After Russell Penn had stung the palms of Gindre from long range and Dean Bennett had blazed over from a similar distance, Woking took the lead with a wonderful solo goal.
In the 24th minute, Matt Pattison picked the ball up in midfield and turned well. Evading a number of challenges, he kept his run going, to burst into the box and calmly guide the ball past MacKenzie and into the back of the net. It was a goal that the Cards start had deserved. However, the visitors should have equalised on 29 minutes when Iyseden Christie headed Mark Creighton's long ball forward onto the crossbar. Christie reacted quickly and poked the rebound goalwards but Gindre pulled off a reflex stop to keep it out before a combination of Gasson and Lorraine completed the clearance, although Christie remained convinced it had crossed the line.
In the 36th minute, Batt's cross was won by Morgan who turned superbly in the area before lashing a shot into the LGS and just before half time a tame long range shot from Penn rolled harmlessly wide. However, all in all, it was an entertaining half with the Cards playing some neat passing and things got better as the game progressed.
On 49 minutes, good work from Pattison kept the ball alive in the corner and Sole darted inside only to hit a poor effort into the arms of MacKenzie. He got another chance not long after when Woking were awarded a free kick but the wall blocked his effort. After Christie had lashed a half chance miles wide at the other end the Cards added a second in the 55th minute. Morgan latching onto a ball forward and although his cross was deflected it still fell kindly for an onrushing Quamina who made no mistake and found the net from close range.
Woking killed off the game on the hour when Pattison added his second of the match. Morgan picked up a looped ball over the top from Maledon and he found Batt who put in a low cross, which was met by the Cards midfielder. He took a touch before rifling a half volley into the back of the net. Both teams had chances to score before the final whistle. In the 69th minute, after Sole had played him through, Morgan had a pass blocked before he tried to find the net but could only smash the ball into the KRE and moments later Christie fired over when he should have done better. Substitute Sam Yorke had an effort deflected wide, Pattison went close to getting his hat-trick and Gindre saved a flicked header from Daryl Knights before the final whistle ended both team's seasons.
In reality, today didn't tell us much due to the nature of the game but I think it shows that there definitely is some quality in this side and I still think in Pattison, Sole and Morgan the Cards have an attacking threat and with Hutchinson, Gasson and Bunce at the back they have ¾ of a strong and reliable defence. It's just a case of building around that, mainly in central midfield, to produce a side, which will get Woking further up the table. I personally would have liked to see Frank Gray given the chance to do that but David Taylor has made his decision and will hopefully bring in a new manager who will get the team putting in more performances like todays, more consistently. In my opinion, there is certainly a good base of players to work from.
