Jay performed well in the 2007/08 season but decided he wanted
to go back to University in the summer and went part time with Havant and Waterlooville.
22 year-old Jay Gasson is one of three summer recruits from
neighbours Farnborough, manager Frank Gray pouncing after his former club's
demise. Jay is a left sided centre back, and is expected to slot in alongside
skipper Tom Hutchinson and one other in a back three this coming season. Jay
signed a two-year contract to keep him at Kingfield until the summer of 2009.
Jay debuted for Farnborough Town under Gray in August 2005. He was a key part of
Farnborough's rearguard in the charge to the play-off semi-finals, a marvellous
achievement given the financial problems at the club. He continued at
Farnborough in an even more difficult 2006/07 season, helping the club from a
difficult position to eventual mid-table safety. In total, Jay made 81
appearances for the club, impressing throughout.
Cards fans will be hoping Jay can step up and produce his solid defensive
displays alongside our skipper in a back three. In the little I saw of him at
Basingstoke in our first friendly, he certainly looked mobile and good in the
tackle. He also looked willing to play the ball out of defence, which is already
a relief to the Cards faithful. He will be a key part of Frank Gray's new look
side, as the new manager looks to push the Cards up the table playing more
attractive football than in past seasons.
